Chocolate Peanut Butter Rice Krispy Bars have been a family favorite since discovering the recipe in our Bay Area California kitchen almost 15 years ago. When we first tried the original sugar-filled recipe, our brother Ben obsessed over them. He might have requested them almost weekly and soon, our family was hooked. They are hard to resist with a full, rich chocolate and peanut butter flavor!
These bars make the perfect treat to take hiking, road tripping or in packed lunches. Perhaps one reason they are so popular in our family even today is because they make the very best care package treats! Our family lives long distances away from each other so we can surprise each other with simple treats like these. These chocolate peanut butter bars hold up in the mail through days of travel to get to the recipient in delectable, mint condition!
With our naturally sweet version, you can enjoy these delicious, chewy dessert bars in a more healthy way! The use of natural peanut butter omits the use of regular butter and gives these bars a truly decadent peanut flavor. Delicious chocolate swirled into the mix omits the need for sugary marshmallows. The combination of flavors, textures and natural ingredients make them completely perfect.

Oh Yum! I’ve never seen a box labeled “natural” rice crispies, where do you find them?
Annie says
Hi Gwen! We like any brand that doesn’t have sugar! We didn’t mean any particular brand when we mentioned the natural kind. But you can find natural rice crispies at trader joes or at Whole Foods. Thanks!

I have recently started to bake using naturally sweetened recipes. I have made two muffin recipes from a cookbook I own and they far exceeded my expectations!!! I just have a few newbie questions about this simple recipe ;)
1.) I have seen several forms of “natural” peanut butter. Which type are you referring to? Is it the kind that is just peanuts ground into peanut butter or does it come in a jar?
2.) Are the sugar free chocolate chips the “grain” chocolate chips – are some types better thans other’s & are there things I need to watch for in the ingredients?
3.) Are natural rice crispies just a cereal where you actually reconize the ingredients in the list?
Thanks for your help. I am super excited to start trying things from your blog and I will definitely comment when I do. The blog you ladies have put together is so great and I love that I will be able to use is it my new adventures in naturally sweet recipes!

Hi Mackbrad!
That’s great you’re having success with more natural recipes! I’m so happy you are having successes and are continuing to experiment!
To answer your questions:
The natural peanut butter we refer to is any kind that is JUST ground peanuts without any oils or sugar added to it. You can find these at any grocery store, but I like Trader Joe’s kind the best.
When ever we use sugar free chocolate, it is always real chocolate! We have a post all about our favorite chocolates here http://naturallysweetrecipes.blogspot.com/2012/02/favorite-chocolates.html
If you can’t find some of these, in most of our recipes, you can exchange chopped up chocolate or chocolate chunks for chocolate chips if you can not find the sugar free chips. And if you are really in a bind and can’t find any sugar free chocolate, the darkest chocolate you can find will work fine, even if it has some sugar in it.
Natural rice crispies are just a regular cereal! They are exactly like the Kellogs brand, but they do not use unhealthy oils or sugars and use all natural ingredients. Most natural crispies are also either sugar free or sweetened naturally. You can find these at Trader Joes, Whole Foods, or any other natural food store that sells cereals.
Thank you so much for your questions and very sweet comments! I look forward to hearing any of your reviews of our recipes if you ever decide to try them! Hope you have a great day!

LOL, I have always adored the texture of rice crispy treats and haven’t had one in years because of all the butter and sugary marshmallows. Can’t tell you how psyched I am to try this recipe!!

Brilliant! I love Rice crispie treat-esque desserts (especially in summer, no oven, woohoo!) but I always feel yucky eating them with all the marshmallows, butter and packaged cereal. This looks like a perfect substitution, I can’t wait to make them. I might even try some alternate nut butters. ;)
Annie @ Naturally Sweet Recipes says
Another nut butter is a great idea! Let us know how you liked them if you do! :)
