All my friends growing up called Oreo cookies “Annie’s Favorite Cookie”. America might love them, but nobody liked them as much as I did.  This best-selling cookie easily became one recipe I wanted to make naturally sweet. We all know homemade is even better than store-bought and you won’t be able to beat these when made sugar-free!
Since I first tasted that balance of chocolate and cream, my inner child has been hooked on that decadent flavor and texture. But the grown-up me now appreciates bigger, better things. Store-bought Oreo cookies may taste good, but my tastes have changed to appreciate delectably soft, fresh Oreos. Any adult who wishes to relive their childhood love in the most fabulous way possible – homemade, delicious and healthy – is in for a real treat.
You’ll be pleased with the ingredient list – we’re talking whole grains, healthy fats and natural sugars! These are even dairy-free! You can bake these a little longer for a crispier, crunchier cookie typical of the real Oreo cookies, which makes them suitable for dunking in milk. Or, enjoy the softer, delicate cookies that create that coveted luscious bite that only the homemade version can create. The kid inside (or any kids for that matter!) will be pleased either way. Happy Eating!
Homemade Healthy Oreo Cookies  (dairy-free)
Chocolate Oreo Cookies:
1 1/4 cups Wheat Flour
1/2 cup unsweetened Dark Cocoa Powder (you can use regular, but dark is best!)
2 teaspoons Cornstarch
1 teaspoon Baking Soda
1/4 teaspoon Baking Powder
1/2 teaspoon Sea Salt
1 1/4 cups Coconut Sugar
2/3 cup Earth Balance Butter or Organic Butter, softened
1 teaspoon Pure Vanilla Extract
1 Large Egg plus 1 Egg Yoke
Filling:
1/4 cup Coconut Butter or Vegan Cream Cheese
2/3 cup Earth Balance Butter or Organic Butter, softened
1 1/2 teaspoons Pure Vanilla Extract
1/4 cup Flour
6 drops Liquid Stevia
1/2 cup powdered Xylitol, sweetened to taste
1-2 Tablespoons Almond Milk
Begin with your chocolate cookies. In a large bowl, combine the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder and salt. Mix well. Add coconut sugar and soft butter. Add vanilla and egg and mix in until all is combined. Roll out on a flat, lightly floured surface and cut out cookies with cookie cutters. Or scoop out about a tablespoon amount of dough and roll into balls. Very lightly flatten to a round shape. Place cookies on parchment lined baking sheets and bake cookies at 375 degrees for 7 minutes for softer cookies or 9 minutes for more crisp cookies. Smaller size cookies may just need 6-7 minutes if you want them extra soft. These cookies will spread out and puff a bit, so make them more on the smaller side for authentic sized Oreos.
Once cookies are done baking, begin on the filling. In a small bowl, beat all frosting ingredients in a bowl until well combined. Once cookies are cooled, spread or pipe filling on a cookie, about 1/4 inch thick and place another cookie on top to form a sandwich.
Store cookies in an airtight container. Cookies will last up to 2 days at room temperature or up to 3 weeks in the freezer.
Depending on how small or large you would like your cookies, these will yield 18-25 cookie sandwiches, 1 cup vanilla filling

Have you tried using coconut or almond flour instead of wheat flour? How did they turn out?
Natural Sweet Recipes says
Coconut flour is a pretty unique flour that requires a lot of liquid, so I would not suggest substituting with it. I have not tried almond flour, sorry!
hayley says
sounds awesome I was just wondering if I could use canola oil instead of margarine in cookies? in the middle of a blizzard and out of butter lol
Oreo Lover says
I love oreos! I love that these are healthy oreos! Looks amazing.
Kristin says
Confession: xylitol gives me gas and a really intense stomach ache. Especially if I have to much of it. All of your recipes with xylitol make me wonder if I can substitute something else and all of them. Any thoughts? Have you ever experienced this?
Natural Sweet Recipes says
Hi Kristin, Thanks for your comment! This is definitely not an abnormal reaction if you eat high amounts of sugar alcohols! Because many people have negative reactions to xylitol, I usually use it in combination with other sweeteners (which alleviates any risk of bloating or stomach aches for me personally). For these Oreos, the xylitol is important for the frosting but I used coconut sugar for the cookies. It’s really not a lot of xylitol for the whole recipe and minimizes any ill effects if you only eat 2-3 cookies, (which really is filling). If xylitol upsets you no matter the amount, I’m not sure I can give a good substitution because it is a unique sweetener. For this recipe, I used liquid stevia to cut down on the xylitol. You could decrease the xylitol to 1/3 cup and increase the stevia and see if that works for you. As a general note, I can’t give suggestions for other recipes because there too many other variables. When recipe testing, I always try to keep sugar alcohols under 3/4 a cup because I know more than that doesn’t sit well with many people. I will keep your comment in mind for future recipes. Thank you!

These homemade oreos were delicious. Thank you for sharing. I loved the coconut sugar addition but I wish i didn’t have to use stevia as well. I didn’t use. Thanks for a great recipe.

These look delicious! What a great idea!
Katie @ OhShineOn says
Also, how many cookies does this recipe make?
Annie @ Naturally Sweet Recipes says
Thanks Katie! If you don’t have coconut sugar, you can use regular sugar, but use organic if you can. Though it won’t be a sugar free treat. :) Sorry for not mentioning the yield, thanks for asking! The yield depends on how big you make your cookies and how many you taste before assembling. :) For large sandwich cookies, like the ones in my pictures, you’ll get 12-15 sandwiches (so about 30 actual cookies). And I got that size from rolling out large 1 inch balls of dough. To make them smaller, more like an actual oreo size, you’ll be able to get closer to 20 sandwiches or so. The filling will be adequate for whichever way you make them. Hope that helps!
Katie @ OhShineOn says
I love love love this recipe! I will definitely be making it this weekend! Only problem is… I don’t have coconut sugar. Would regular be just fine?

Yep, I’m pretty oblivious to all things football, but I knew that the Superbowl was coming up because everyone’s pushing nachos and hot wings. Yikes… Your oreo cookies look both cuter and tastier by far!

Yes, if I weren’t married, I probably would be completely oblivious too. :) Thanks so much!
