I will accept that you don’t read this blog for musings on my black lab, Enzo. However, if you follow us on Instagram, you might have grown the tiniest bit fond him seeing him cuddled on my bed or eating something tasty. This might convince you to endure a few quips of him for delicious healthy recipes. Well the air is getting crisper and I’d like get into the pumpkin scene, starting with my dog. Today’s recipe will be for him.
That being said, if you are not a dog lover, I completely understand. We can still start this pumpkin party together. May I distract you with this vegan pumpkin pie for now?
If you are a dog lover, we’re going to let them be the focus of our kitchens today. Let’s go!
Homemade dog treats have a certain charm. We bake for everyone else in our lives so why not our pups. Homemade dog treats are pretty simple to make and are absolutely appreciated. Licking off the pumpkin and coconut oil spoon used to whip up this recipe is a treat in itself. This is one of Enzo’s favorite parts.
I like that these dog treats baked up like soft sugar cookies, making them feel extra special. Once baked, it’s best to store a few in the freezer for a rainy day. They will last a few days stored in an airtight container… but I also like to store half in the freezer so I can treat Enzo anytime. I mean, that’s what it’s all about. The pumpkin, egg and flax make these dog treats pretty nutritious so you’ll want to treat him frequently. My dog didn’t seem to mind that they were nutritious. I hope yours inhales these as quickly as Enzo!
Homemade Healthy Pumpkin Dog Treats
- 1 cup Canned Pumpkin
- 3 Tablespoons Organic Coconut Oil
- 1 Organic Large Egg
- 1 1/2 Tablespoons Flax Seeds
- 2 1/4 Cups Wheat Flour
Instructions:
Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.
In a mixing bowl, combine the pumpkin, coconut oil and egg. Mix well to combine. Add the flax and flour and mix until smooth. Dump onto a lightly floured surface, sprinkle with more flour and roll out about 1/4 inch thick.
Cut with cookie cutters and place on a parchment lined baking sheet. Bake dog treats 10-12 minutes, or until golden. If you want crispier treats for your dog, roll a little thinner and bake for an extra minute. Store treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or in the freezer for up to 3 weeks.
