We’re in this holiday season and I want everything to have a cloud of sweet powdered sugar over it. One tricky thing about “sugar-free” is creating healthy desserts that are meant to be snow white – vanilla frosting, ice cream or just plain powdered sugar dusted over cakes, scones or pies – without sugar! Luckily, we have a solution!
Powdered xylitol or erythritol is a fantastic substitute for recipes calling for white sugar or powdered sugar because they are white granulated sweeteners. When blended with a tiny bit of flour, they resemble powdered sugar’s taste and texture. The flour is added to help these sweeteners from dissolving into certain recipes. The major perk is that these two sweeteners have only a third of the calorie content as regular white sugar so you can layer it on Lemon Bars, Caramel French Toast Bake or Buttermilk Spice Cake!
Another fabulous use for this powdered sugar is to make Cinnamon Sugar!
This sweet combination is perfect for adding to a small seasoning shaker to sprinkle on toast, apples, crepes, bananas, cookies or anything that deserves a sprinkling of something sweet.
Powdered sugar in cinnamon sugar ensures that crystals don’t get caught in your shaker and it fuses with the cinnamon. We like to go heavy on the cinnamon here and add it over Apple Cinnamon Waffles and Baked Sweet Potato Fries .
Once you have these two sugars ready in your spice cabinet, you’ll be able to easily transform any recipe in a pinch!

Sugar-Free Powdered Sugar – 2 Ways
SUGAR-FREE POWDERED SUGAR
1/2 cup Xylitol or Erythritol
1 teaspoon White Flour or Spelt Flour
CINNAMON SUGAR
1/4 cup Xylitol or Erythritol
1 Tablespoon Cinnamon
- In a high powdered blender, blend sweetener with flour for a minute until the sweetener becomes a smooth powder. The sweetener will “smoke” a bit in the blender bowl, so carefully remove the lid when blended. Pour the powdered sugar in a container to store and use however you would use powdered sugar.
- For the cinnamon sugar, add 3-4 Tablespoons of sugar to a season shaker and add 1 tablespoon cinnamon. Cover and shake to combine.
