Several weeks ago, a friend gave me some amazing jam that she had bought at a farmers market. There were an assortment of jams that she’d tried and she kindly let me have a jar of strawberry basil and raspberry grapefruit to sample. I’d never tasted flavor combinations like those before, but my, I was addicted! The strawberry was sweet, but with just enough savory tones to be totally unique. The raspberry grapefruit had a nice punch of tartness that intensified with each bite. The sweet and tart flavors of these delicious jams inspired some baking.
I won’t be sharing a recipe for those jams today, because I haven’t figured out how to make them yet! However, if you’ve been hoarding a special jar of jam in your kitchen or you’re debating whether or not to make another batch of your favorite jam recipe, (I think you probably do), then this is the place for you.
About one year ago, my sisters and I made small pie tarts that were just the tastiest homemade version of a pop tart or hand pies, some people call them. Prepared jam filled the inside pockets of those pies so perfectly! I gave my leftover jams a try with that recipe and I was quite glad I did! The soft flaky crust of these tarts are just the perfect companion for fresh jams or jellies. At the height of summer, you’re bound to have some leftover jam around. Be good to yourself and the jam! Use it in a delicious way.
