My Favorite Chocolate Smoothie

April 5, 2017

Here we are into April, welcoming the spring season! I’m just so happy about the weather these days. There’s something really special about eating dinner with the sun beaming past 6 pm and the calming chirp of wildlife – near enough to hear the singsong buzz, but distant enough they aren’t swarming. We can leave our windows open and enjoy icy chilled treats without fret. It really is a beautiful time of year!

I like to work in healthful and invigorating breakfasts during this bright season. When overnight oats or fried eggs get old, smoothies are always an easy fall-back breakfast or nutritious dessert. My husband loves the occasional smoothie in the morning… but only if I promise not to throw in obscene amounts of veggies in them (it may have happened a few times). To appease myself and my husband, a chocolate flavor does the trick. I love smoothies with extra veggies added in, but I also love sweet smoothies that taste like ice cream! We all do! This recipe is a delicious chocolate treat that allows you to sneak in a few greens but still tastes nothing short of a creamy, frothy chocolate breakfast milkshake! And best of all, healthy foods critics can’t taste the extra nutritional boost of greens! It’s a breakfast win!

My Favorite Chocolate Smoothie

1/2 Large Frozen Banana
1/2 cup Chopped Kale (I use frozen)
1 1/2 scoops Chocolate Protein Powder (I use a pea protein based powder)
1 Tablespoon Flax Seeds
1 teaspoon Maca Powder, optional
1 cup Almond Milk or Coconut Milk
1/4 teaspoon Liquid Stevia
1 cup Ice

Directions:

In a high speed blender, blend ingredients on your ice cream/milkshake setting until thick, smooth and creamy! If you want more of an icy drink, reserve some of the ice for adding until the kale and seeds have been blended well. Serve immediately or place in the coldest part of your fridge until ready to serve.

Note: Sometimes I like to substitute the maca powder for activated charcoal or greens powder but these will change the color of the smoothie.

SO Incredible!!! This was healthful, delicious and filling. You hide that kale in such a clever way. This was a great treat aside from my normal breakfast smoothie. Delicious! Thanks!
