Poppy Chow (Peanut Butter & Chocolate Popcorn)

February 28, 2012

Now that I’m a puppy owner, I want the very best for our dog and I’m going to crazy extents to make sure he has it! All of a sudden, I’m rationalizing the cost of a 40 dollar collar (which was ridiculously cute) and buying him every chew toy available (which he needs, right?). Not that I ever imagined becoming like this, but well… I’m crazy about my pup.

So when I stumbled upon a recipe called “puppy chow” a few days ago, I smiled from ear to ear. It sounded like the cutest thing ever and the perfect celebratory treat for our new family member. I’m a sucker for celebrating occasions with silly gestures and food.

Traditional Puppy Chow is made with Chex mix, which I didn’t intend to use. Then I saw the same recipe but with popcorn!
Chocolate? Peanut butter? Popcorn? That was apparently a thing and I’ve been missing out.

It seems other recipes for this call for a heaping amount of powdered sugar dusted over top. Honestly, I can’t imagine making it more sweet, nor risk masking the lovely combination of peanut butter and chocolate. The chocolate and peanut butter is pure perfection and so absolutely easy to make. It’s fantastically addicting. Every peanut buttery, chocolate covered popcorn morsel will easily make you love it like crazy.

Poppy Chow (Chocolate & Peanut Butter Popcorn) (vegan option)

Print Recipe (adapted from tasty kitchen)

1/2 cup Organic Corn Kernels
1/2 teaspoon Pink Sea Salt
1 1/4 cup Semi-Sweet Sugar Free Chocolate Chips
1/2 cup Natural Peanut Butter
3 Tablespoons Butter (or Coconut Oil, but it will be a lot more sticky)
1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract

In an air popper or other popcorn maker, pop your popcorn. A half cup of kernels actually makes a lot of popcorn, so make one batch before deciding if you want/need to double or triple the recipe!

In a medium size bowl melt the chocolate, peanut butter and butter in the microwave or on the stove.

Stir together to combine. Stir in vanilla once cooled slightly. Pour the popped popcorn in a large bowl, Make sure to remove any kernels- this stuff is so yummy, you won’t want to check each bite for kernels, or break a tooth! Pour the chocolate mixture over all the popcorn. Gently stir to evenly coat all the popcorn. Spread out on a cookie sheet and refrigerate to set the chocolate. If you have any left overs, cover and store in a cool place.

Hahaha I love that! Of course he’s worth a $40 collar, he’s your baby! But I also love how your puppy is inspiring your recipe choices! It’s like when I made natural peanut butter treats for my friend’s dog – I LOVED them. Of course most people would hate them as they weren’t sweetened, but I have way less sweet tastebuds than most regular people and I scarfed them down lol. Then I got to thinking I really should develop a ‘dog treat for people’ recipe. Haha…still working on that one ;). This chow looks DELISH!

It’s true! It’s hard to say no… that’s a great idea!! I like a lot of less sweet treats too. Thanks, it’s yummy!

Yes! That’s the only thing that kept me from buying it. But when he’s older… haha
