Recently, we posted on our Facebook and Twitter pages that we began a version of the popular Whole30 challenge. We’d felt so great after our candida diet a few years ago, that we wanted to recharge by cutting out grains, soy, dairy and all sugars. After being quite strict, we decided to reward ourselves with a pure, fruit sweetened treat.
What a treat this crisp was! When you cut out all sugar, your body remembers how incredible real, sweet fruit is! This apple crisp is pure acknowledgement of what fruit can do. Adding a few other ingredients to these apples makes them sweet, soft and oh so delicious!
For those who haven’t been so strict in your diet, you could add a drizzle of maple syrup or honey in this, but even without those sweeteners, this is definitely not lacking in flavor. This crisp contains a pure apple flavor with a super soft baked filling and the sweetest crumbly crispy coating. These beauties contain all that with just sweetened fruit!
Sugar-Free Apple Crisp (vegan, gluten-free and sugar-free)
Apple Filling:
1 large Sweet Apple, diced
2 Tablespoons Whole, Natural Grape or PearJuice
1/2 teaspoon Lemon Juice
1/2 teaspoon Cinnamon
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. In a small bowl, mix together the diced apple with the other ingredients. Fill small ramekins with the mixture. Place ramekins on a baking sheet, on the middle rack of the oven and bake for 20-22 minutes, until the apples are softened, but not totally tender.
Crumble Crisp Topping:
4 Medjool Dates
1/2 Tablespoon Almond Butter or Coconut Butter
1/4 teaspoon Cinnamon
2 Tablespoons Almond Meal
In a food processor, combine all the crumble ingredients. Remove the apples from the oven after 20-22 minutes, sprinkle the crisp topping over and return to the oven for another 4-5 minutes. You can also broil for a few seconds to achieve even more crisp. Allow to cool slightly before enjoying.
Yields 2 Sugar-Free Apple Crisps

Mmmm! The crunchy topping sounds like a wonderful idea! I will try this method the next time I make baked apples which my daughter loves!
PS Great job for the naturally sweet way of life! ;-)

I love the idea of doing the Whole30 challenge. Never to late to start, right? I could use the challenge now more than ever, seeing as I spent the weekend drinking wine and eating waaaaay too much sugar-filled granola…and chocolate chips…and ice cream. Yeeeah, I could push the reset button for sure. Anyway, this apple crisp looks like the perfect treat to enjoy! Healthful yet satisfying!
